Jonathan E. Tammela, MD
Board Certified in Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Tammela is a Prevea Health physician, with his office located in the St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Tammela earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He went on to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida, Jacksonville. He then completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Tammela is Board-Certified in both Obstetrics/Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology. In addition to presenting at numerous medical conferences, nationally and internationally, Dr. Tammela is a published author of dozens of articles in peer-reviewed medical journals as well as contributing to several medical textbook chapters.
Dr. Tammela is the principal investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) clinical trials for St. Vincent’s Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP), keeping abreast of the most recent advances in available treatment options. He is also trained in using minimally invasive surgical techniques, utilizing the da Vinci Surgical Robot for treating certain types of cancers. This approach offers appealing advantages to patients, including a faster and less painful recovery from surgery. Dr. Tammela provides a full spectrum of cancer care through his office, including surgery, chemotherapy, and surveillance. This management model offers the advantage of seamless coordinated care with one specialist.
Our Gynecological Oncology department has seen tremendous growth since Dr. Tammela’s arrival in the fall of 2005, demonstrating the need for such specialized care in northeastern Wisconsin. This need is evidenced region-wide, with many patients coming from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and many other northern Wisconsin counties to seek his expertise.
In addition to his specialized training in treating gynecologic malignancies, Dr. Tammela possesses a genuine concern for his patients and a warm personality. Dr. Tammela was awarded the “St. Vincent Hospital Living Our Mission Award” in the spring of 2007, after being nominated by many staff and patients with comments such as:
