Research
and clinical trials
Research is an integral part of the Regional
Cancer Center's program. Research affords individuals the opportunity
to take part in clinical trials designed to find the best possible
treatments and therapies for cancer. Research compares the best
know treatment with new treatments or confirmation which have a
possibilty of improving current out comes.
ST.
VINCENT CANCER PROGRAM IS DESIGNATED TOP NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTER.
Research is an integral
.improving current outcomes.
The National Cancer
Institute has designated St. Vincent Hospital as one of the
newest sites for its prestigious Community
Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) and, as a result, has
awarded the hospital a grant for cancer research. The
designation makes St. Vincent one of only 61 major cancer
research sites in 34 states, the District of Columbia and
Puerto Rico. Marshfield Clinic and St. Vincent are the only
two such sites in Wisconsin.
Participation in the Community Clinical Oncology Program benefits
patients and physicians in the community, as well as scientists
in research centers. The program will allow us to bring the latest
research findings directly into our community. It also increases
the number of patients and physicians who can take part in clinical
trials operated at major research centers and makes it possible
for scientists to conduct large-scale cancer prevention and control
studies. Among the things the new St. Vincent Cancer Research Program
will provide are:
More screening to help detect cancer earlier
More prevention studies to help people determined to be at
risk remain cancer free
Access to new treatment protocols and drugs to people who
have been diagnosed with certain types of cancer
Opportunities for local people to directly contribute to
the body of knowledge scientists need to find a cure for
cancer.
What makes the designation so unique is that the NCI has given cancer
research at the St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center its stamp of
approval for demonstrating a high level of expertise in cancer research
and the government is acknowledging our high quality cancer care.
With that comes the ability to work directly with the NCI to bring
people in this part of the country direct access to cutting edge
cancer clinical trials, drugs and prevention studies, allowing the
St. Vincent Cancer Research Program to step up its commitment to
high quality cancer research, care and prevention.
The St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center has been accredited
since 1958 and has been doing cancer research for over 20
years, with more than 1500 adults and children from northeastern
Wisconsin placed on studies over that time. Our physician
partners in cancer research include Green Bay Oncology, Ltd.,
Radiation Oncology Specialists and Prevea Clinic. Research
sites include the St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center and
its affiliated sites at St. Marys Hospital
Medical Center in Green Bay and Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette.
Located
in radiation & medical oncology clinics for patient
convenience.
