Child Birth and Early Parenting

Beginning Childbirth Education:  Get ready for your Labor and Delivery journey. Taught by an experienced Childbirth Educator, this extensive 4 week class will help expecting parents achieve a sense of satisfaction with their birth experience. As part of this course we will explore the process of labor and birth, discuss options in birth, and educate fathers and coaches on how they can assist expectant mothers during labor and delivery. Throughout the class couples will be given opportunities to discover different techniques of breathing and relaxation which can be utilized during labor. This class is offered in a group setting, or it can be arranged to meet one-on-one with an educator to meet your individual needs.

6 Week Childbirth Education:  This class covers all the material addressed in the Beginning Childbirth Education, plus an additional two weeks of Baby Care information. Content discussed will include: basic baby care, overview of feeding, introduction to solid foods, common concerns, parenting tips and much more.

Teen Childbirth Education:   Offered with the special needs of teen parents in mind, this 6 week course addresses the same material covered in the Beginning Childbirth Education and Baby Business classes. Teen childbirth Education is facilitated by an educator with over 25 years of experience working with teen parents. Classes are free, but early registration is recommended. 

C-section Childbirth Class:  Whether this is your first pregnancy or you’ve had a c-section in the past, this class, facilitated by an experienced Childbirth Educator will discuss the process of cesarean section for delivering your new baby. We will take you from admission through the recovery process. Class is offered several times throughout the year or can be taught in a private setting. Call 433-8565 for more information.   

Baby Business:  Taking a new baby home for the first time can be challenging. Alleviate some of your fears and concerns by attending this informational two week class. Topics addressed include: basic baby care, overview of feeding, introduction to solid foods, common concerns, parenting tips and much more.  Share your thoughts with other expecting parents. Information presented in a relaxed atmosphere where many of your questions about being a new parent can be answered.

Breastfeeding:  If you are thinking about breastfeeding, the time to prepare is before birth. We have a course, taught by a certified lactation consultant, which will help you prepare for breastfeeding. You will learn basic skills to enhance the breastfeeding experience. Our course is comprehensive, but easy to follow. You can learn what you need to know in a single evening. Couples are encouraged to attend.

Boot Camp for New Dads:  Facilitated by fathers, Boot Camp enables  dads-to-be to “step up” to the tremendous challenge of becoming a dad and feel confident bringing the new baby home. Speak with dads who have already transitioned into this new role and see how they intact with their own babies. The class is a three-hour workshop covering not only the needs of your baby and fatherhood, but also discusses the changes the new mom might be experiencing.

Mom and Me workshop:  St. Vincent Hospital Health and Birthing center offers new moms and their babies a  unique way  meet other new moms, as well as get  practical information about the changes that occur as your baby grows and develops. The 4th Tuesday of every month a different topic of discussion will be addressed such as: feeding/breastfeeding issues, growth and development, benefits of infant massage, how to calm a fussy baby, and many more areas of your babies development. There is no registration required for this class and up coming monthly topics are posted in the St. Vincent Hospital web-site.      

Big Brother/Big Sister Class:  This is an opportunity for the “big brother or sister” to have fun while visiting where mommy and baby will be. A short tour of the Women’s Health and Birthing Center will be followed by a movie, snack and other activities. This class is offered for one hour one Saturday morning each month. 

Infant Massage:  Nurture your baby with the loving touch of Infant Massage. Our certified massage therapist will guide you through massage during this two-part session. Learn how nurturing touch benefits both your baby and you by: helping baby sleep better, helping to relieve colic and tummy discomforts, deepening bonding, and improving communication.    

Infant CPR:  This two and on-half hour course teaches adults and other care givers how to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to infants. Also discussed are the steps to take to aid a choking infant. Great class for grandparents as well!

Grandparent Class:  "We're going to be grandparents"
Our baby is having a baby! Becoming a grandparent for the first time is something many people look forward to with great anticipation, but it is equally important to remember that the role of a grandparent differs greatly from your role as a parent. This informational class will explore new trends in childcare such as: bathing & cord care, breastfeeding, introducing solids foods to your baby, car seat safety, and safety in your home. Our experience childbirth educator, and grandparent, will discuss the changes that occur as your role changes from that of a parent to that of a grandparent. Enjoy a tour of the labor and delivery suites and learn how giving birth may differ from your experiences.

Women’s Health and Birthing Center Tour:  We invite you to see the Women’s Health and Birthing Center here at St. Vincent Hospital.  Take a first hand look at our birthing and post- partum rooms. View the nursery where your baby will be cared for throughout your stay. We’ll take you behind the scenes so you can see special equipment and the extra special care you can expect at our Birthing Center. A tour is also included as part of St Vincent Childbirth Education classes.  Your tour guide and other professionals will be happy to address any concerns or questions you might have.  To schedule a tour phone 433-8329.
