The future of heart care has a story.

If your life story includes heart care, your future just got a lot brighter.

At The Heart Center at St. Vincent Hospital, we’ve turned the page on your life story to a stronger, healthier future by adding heart surgery and other advanced heart treatments to our complete list of services offered by our highly specialized medical team. We’ve found a winning combination of high-end medicine that’s delivered with compassion, always keeping the needs of the patient in mind.  While in our care, you can rest assured your heart is in good hands.

Patient- and Family-centered Care

The Heart Center carries the mission and lives the values at the heart of St. Vincent Hospital. Providing care that focuses on the patient and family is first and foremost to our staff.

Our patient and family care program is built around dignity and respect, information sharing, participation and teamwork because we understand heart disease doesn’t just affect the patient – it affects their loved ones, too.

Our skilled nurses give regular updates to family members and the patients they are worried about so that everyone is aware of the patient’s condition and progress. We know this eases the patient’s concern for their loved ones and allows him or her to focus on healing.

The Heart Center always keeps up with the latest in health care. It is one of the few centers in the region to offer TMR, or transmyocardial laser revascularization, and the first in the region to implement the SPY Intraoperative Imaging System.

Patients with coronary artery disease are normally treated with procedures like angioplasty and stenting, coronary artery bypass grafting (surgery) and medications to improve blood flow to the heart muscle. But if these procedures don’t take away the chest pain, other treatments – like TMR – are available. TMR is a new treatment that gets blood flowing to areas of the heart that were not treated by angioplasty or surgery. A special laser is used to create small channels in the heart muscle, improving bloodflow in the heart.

The SPY System tells the heart surgeon right away whether the bypass grafts he has just placed in the patient’s heart are working properly. The system helps assure the quality of the bypass surgery.

The Heart Center Team

The Heart Center team includes a long list of professionals: cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, electrophysiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, critical care and surgery nurses, cardiovascular technicians, clinical perfusionists, and numerous other clinical and support staff who have years of experience and specialized training in cardiac care. Our experts understand that caring for patients means more than providing top-notch clinical care; it also means treating each person with compassion and individual attention.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

The Heart Center houses both an inpatient and an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program designed to meet the specific needs of each patient. The cardiac rehab team works to help patients reverse their symptoms, make the most of their heart function and further their sense of well-being through:

  • A progressive exercise program
  • Educational classes to help patients adjust to or change their lifestyles and habits
  • Stress management
  • Counseling patients on managing their specific heart condition/disease
  • Preparing patients for the physical and psychological demands of returning to work

Structure of The Heart Center

The Heart Center was built with the care and comfort of heart patients and their families in mind. For example, our cath labs, cardiovascular operating room and intensive care unit are just steps away from each other. This lets the doctor see a patient in a cath lab and, if surgery is needed right away, the doctor can bring the patient next door to receive surgery. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is next door so staff can monitor patients closely after surgery.

The entrance of the Heart Center is home to the family and patient waiting area. Comfortable furniture and calming colors welcome families to a place meant to take their minds off the worries of heart care. Family may sit and read from a selection of books and magazines, keep other family members updated via the Internet, watch TV or see a favorite DVD, play games on one of the computers in the room or just spend time listening to the peaceful flow of the water sculpture.

For more than 117 years, patients have trusted us to care for your most complex health needs. Now, we’re making the future even brighter with our new Heart Center.
