Fourth Floor-Orthopaedics-Neuro

Care, Quality, Joy and Respect Values

4th Floor is a 25 bed mixed adult Orthopaedic, Neurology, Neurosurgery and post trauma care unit.

We are part of a multidisciplinary team which includes physicians, clinical nurse specialists, therapists, case managers, dieticians and other services as needed.  We also feel that the support of family members and friends is an integral part of each patient’s recovery.

A part of our nursing unit is a designated Joint Replacement Center where we provide care for patients who have had hip or knee replacement surgery.  We encourage our joint replacement patients to designate a coach who is a friend or family member to participate in the patient’s recovery here in the hospital and at home.  We provide the opportunity for patients and their coaches to attend a class prior to their joint replacement to learn more about the surgery and post operative care.

St. Vincent Hospital is a JCAHO Certified Primary Stroke Center.  Our nursing staff has the opportunity to participate in community stroke screenings.  We feel that community education and prevention are important aspects of the care that we provide.

Quotes from the staff on 4th floor:
The Neurological/Orthopedics department is a team of dedicated professionals who provides patient and family centered care; the nurses along with the medical staff and therapists, case managers and dieticians, chaplains, help individuals who are recovering from multiple injuries, a stroke or a total joint replacement and are working toward “graduation” to the Rehabilitation Department or home.  The team on 4th floor helps prepare people as they regain their independence so that they have the knowledge and skills that they need to safely go home.
Kathryn Ulmen RN, Neuroscience CNS

The nurses on 4th floor work collaboratively with physicians, therapists, dieticians, pastoral care staff and case managers to plan and implement personalized plans of care for our patients.  We feel that family members play a significant role in the patient’s recovery and we encourage their participation in care and the planning process while the patient is hospitalized.
Judy Doersch, Assistant Director 4th Floor

We are very excited about our new VIP Orthopedic Program.  Our joint center of excellence focuses on total hip and total knee replacement patients offering weekly joint camp classes to prepare patients and families for their hospital stay and discharge needs.
Patty Zenner, RN Joint Coordinator

I love the nurses here because we are sensitive, laugh, and have a good time.

The staff is nice, friendly, and willing to help one another out.

I like the people I work with.  I have the opportunity to see and work with many different people in other areas of the hospital.
