Is a comprehensive emergency air and ground transportation program,
which provides Critical Care level treatments during rapid transport
of critically ill or injured patients. This transportation
is provided by fixed wing airplane, helicopter, or ground ambulance
from medical facilities or accident scenes. EAGLE III is
available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Eagle III
program is a partnership between County Rescue Services, St. Vincent
hospital, and Bellin hospital.
Eagle III is staffed by specially trained
RN’s and Paramedics. In addition to an extensive orientation,
each of the four core SVH Flight RN’s participating in
the program has the following credentials; CFRN (Certified Flight
RN), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced
Life Support), NALS (Neonatal Advanced Life Support), TNCC (Trauma
Nursing Core Curriculum), and ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric
Course). The Flight RN’s at St. Vincent hospital
work twenty-four hour shifts. A typical day for a Flight
RN would include; rounding on the patients admitted to the Trauma
service to collect registry data and working in the Emergency
Department. This is in addition to any Critical Care Transports
that may arise. The Flight team is also very active in
the community offering injury prevention events such as ENCARE
(teen drinking and driving program), Gun Lock Safety, and general
first aid.
The Eagle III RN’s completed 231 critical care transports
on 2005. This number increased from 196 in 2004. We
continue to see an increase in requests for flights as well. The
Eagle III RN’s completed 123 injury prevention presentations
reaching over 5000 people.
