Femoral nerve block
is another option for post-operative pain control after knee surgery. The femoral nerve is responsible for most of the feeling of and around the knee. A nerve block puts that nerve to sleep for a period of time. This makes the leg and knee numb (no pain, or very little) and weak.  As patients are prepared for surgery an anesthesiologist inserts a catheter into the groin that delivers pain medication directly to the knee.  It stops pain almost completely.  The catheter is removed a few days after the surgery. The advantage of the nerve block is that it provides strong pain control, so the need for IV narcotics is reduced. This decreases the side effects caused by narcotics, such as nausea, vomiting, itching, and breathing problems.  Less pain also enables patients to do their therapy exercises better and with greater comfort.
