Inpatient Environment
The Regional Pediatric Center at St. Vincent Hospital is designed
with children in mind. It is here that patients and their families
realize that children are treated as special; from the child-sized
drinking fountains, lowered reception desk and handrails, table
and lounges equipped with age-specific toys, books, music room,
computer, games and videos to the unique miniature Main Street hallway
décor. Our patients even have the opportunity to play with
dogs that visit them through the Pet Therapy Program.
In this kids only unit, a highly trained and experienced
staff of pediatric nurses and other professionals treat children
ranging in age from a few days to 18 years. All nurses on the unit
have certification in pediatric nursing and training in providing
appropriate pain relief, inserting IVs and performing special procedures.
A pediatric case manager, a pediatric registered dietitian and a
pediatric clinical nurse specialist are resources to parents who
have questions or concerns about their childs care or progress.
Pediatric-trained physical, occupational and speech therapists provide
inpatient and outpatient therapy based on the childs treatment
plan. A child life specialist helps children and teens work through
painful procedures and deal with the stress of hospitalization.
St. Vincent Hospital recognized parents rights to be an integral
part of their childrens care and their desire to be near their
children during a hospital stay. A pullout couch in each General
Pediatric Inpatient Unit patient room allows parents to stay overnight
with their children if they desire. A parents lounge has a
microwave, refrigerator and shower for parents use. When parents
cannot be with their child, a trained volunteer may be available
to read, play games or sit with the child.
When a child needs home care, home health-trained pediatric nurses
will come to the childs home to help provide treatment.
Hospice care (offered in conjunction with Unity Hospice) is provided
by pediatric nurses with special training.
Affiliation
with Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin
St. Vincent Hospital is affiliated with Childrens Hospital
of Wisconsin to provide top-level specialty pediatric care in both
Critical Care and Hematology/Oncology. While the physician-staff
live in Green Bay and work primarily at St. Vincent Hospital, they
also have received academic appointments to the Medical College
of Wisconsin and have staff privileges at Childrens Hospital
of Wisconsin. Dr. Joel Ament is medical director of Pediatric Critical
Care and Dr. Jon Brandt is medical director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
The affiliation allows for valuable exchange of ideas between the
two institutions. Medical and nursing expertise from Childrens
Hospital, as well as patient and parent education materials are
made available to Green Bay residents as a result of t his affiliation.
