Philosophy
of Care
All children should be cared for in a gentle, tender and holistic
manner by a professional staff that recognizes the special needs
of children. When a sick of injured child requires care at St. Vincent
Hospital, this produces a crisis for that child’s entire family.
Therefore, the family unit is the focus of our care.
The guidelines for care of children at St. Vincent Hospital are:
1. To recognize that all children’s diagnoses are of equal
importance and seriousness to the child’s parents or caregivers
and that all sick children need specialized care and close attention;
2. To provide an environment in which a child is respected, can
express feelings without being judged and is involved with and informed
about the care needed to return to health and home;
3. To acknowledge and advocate for the rights of children’s
parents or caregivers:
• To stay with their children under most circumstances
• To ask questions
• To be part of the care given to their children
• To be informed of their child’s progress by the physician
4. To provide pediatric patients a staff of compassionate and competent
caregivers who have education in caring for and meeting the needs
of children and their families.
