Newborn Intensive Care Unit
St. Vincent Hospital's Women's Services Center
is home to the region's Level III newborn intensive care unit (NICU).
This unit provides care for infants born too early, with low birth
weights, with congenital birth defects or with other
problems.
One of the hospital's neonatologists is always in the hospital to
attend difficult births or to provide immediate diagnosis and specialized
care. A registered nurse case manager is assigned to all babies
in the NICU. The case manager serves as a liaison between the neonatologist,
baby's primary doctor and the parents. The case manager also is
available to help parents find short-term housing, help them understand
the baby's treatment plan and arrange for other assistance.
Though most women delivering babies at St. Vincent Hospital have
a healthy, joyful birth experience, if a need arises, it's comforting
to know the NICU is immediately available.
The St. Vincent Hospital Women's Sevices Center also provides a
specially trained medical team that can travel to outlying
hospitals and help transport ill newborns to the NICU.
