Driver
Rehabilitation and Safety Program
Driving plays an important part
in keeping an active and rewarding lifestyle. The St. Vincent Hospital’s
Driver Rehabilitation and Safety Program recognizes that “getting
around” is important for shopping, appointments, dining or
just socializing. While many people can continue to drive safely
well into advanced age, an injury or illness may prevent others
from driving.
St Vincent Hospital’s Driver Rehabilitation
and Safety Program evaluates the basic components necessary for
safe driving. Those components include arm, neck and leg movements,
vision and perception, and problem solving and memory.
Clinic Evaluation by Occupational Therapist addresses:
- Arm
movement, strength, coordination for steering wheel and console
control
- Neck
and trunk movement for full field of vision in driving
- Leg
movement and strength for gas and braking ability, speed
and smoothness
- Vision
and perception
including:
- general acuity
- peripheral vision
- depth perception
- visual scanning
- visual reaction speed
- Cognition
for problem solving, memory, attentiveness, and reaction
speed for driving situations
- Mobility
for transferring into car or van
- Equipment
