HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital helping expand access to dental care in Sheboygan County

SHEBOYGAN - With a waitlist of 900 people, Lakeshore Community Health Care (LCHC) in Sheboygan knew it needed more space for its dental clinic.

Following an expansion in 2017, the clinic was able to double its capacity. That year, it served more than 8,000 patients and the clinic no longer has a waitlist.

HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital has been involved with LCHC since the clinic’s inception. The hospital continues to provide funding for new dental equipment, as well as providing support for the clinic’s mobile school dental program. Lakeshore Community Health Care is active in schools throughout Sheboygan County.

“We offer students all of the same services as our dental clinic, along with teaching good brushing and flossing habits,” said Julie Risse, Lakeshore Community Health Care School Dental Coordinator.

The mobile school dental program served 774 students in the 2017-2018 school year, up from 657 children the year prior.

“The ability give children dental care in-school removes so many barriers,” said Julie. “Parents do not need to worry about transportation or missing work and students spend less time out of the classroom.”

The partnership between HSHS and LCHC help increase access for some of the most underserved members of the community. More than 80 percent of LCHC’s patients are either uninsured or receive Medicaid.

Lakeshore Community Health Care’s mission is to provide comprehensive care to people, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. That mission perfectly aligns with the mission of HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division.

Without the dental clinic’s intervention, patients may end up in area emergency rooms, draining hospital resources on cases that could have otherwise been prevented.

LCHC also provides medical and behavioral care in Sheboygan and Manitowoc Counties.

As part of the behavioral care services, HSHS St. Nicholas also provided funding for a dual licensed therapist, to address patients with addiction issues.
